ECHO PARK — Since being closed since 2011 for renovations, Echo Park Lake is finally being reopened and the homeless people of Echo Park are ecstatic. During a press conference this morning, LA City Councilman and mayoral candidate Eric Garcetti announced that the lake will reopen on June 15th and he was met with raucous applause and cheering from the hundreds of homeless people who gathered to celebrate the announcement. Carl McHaven, 45, who has been sleeping on the stone-cold concrete of Sunset Blvd., couldn’t contain himself and even had tears coming from his eyes. “I haven’t had a lake to bathe in since they closed it,” he said. “I’m pretty damn smelly, okay? Sure, I could have gone to Silver Lake, but I hate hipsters. Here in Echo Park people are a little more real because they’re a little more poor, know what I mean? Oh man, I can’t wait for the day when I can lay down my cardboard box on the water’s edge again. It’s gonna be so nice to fall asleep face down on the grass and have people wonder if I’m dead.”
